I am a lover of linguistic topics and this is one of my favorite! I am Thamizhan by birth but, with influence of Keralite friends I have learned a few words which are similar in TAMIL and MALAYALAM. Luck: Does it play a role in deciding our life ?

Luck. This is a term heard frequently in day-to-day conversations, both in positive ways and negative ways. Topic of discussion for today is LUCK: Does it play a role in deciding our life ? Expressing a honest opinion, I do believe in luck. Like Thomas Alva Edison rightly stated,  "Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration", without the 1% luck, nothing would have been achieved.  But luck is not only concerned with the word. It depends on what we choose to believe. For example, there was this really hilarious event in class, where I was considered 'bad luck' because whenever I was in class, the net didn't work. But scientifically speaking, it might not have been my presence but just another coincidence.  But seeing at luck philosophically, what we desire + universal power is what results in the world we are living in right now.  There wouldn't have been a paradise like UAE , if Late HH Sheikh Zayed didn't envision it. But the

O' How the free bird flies!

Oh! How the free bird flies Without a grief or sorrow Its face is just a happy picture It does not worry about the past or anticipate about the future It just lives in the moment But we humans ? Always stressing ourselves about the future And punishing ourselves for our past We live in a world Where we can't enjoy a moment of peace Filled with jealousy, greed and loathing Can we never be free  Oh! How the free bird flies Without a grief or sorrow Its face is just a happy picture It does not worry about the past or anticipate about the future It just lives in the moment.

Power of one word

It was just another competition for everyone, But for me, a life depending one I had given my best But my opponent was overpowering me The world around me was spinning Being a world champion wasn’t easy I tried. I tried. I tried. But nothing worked My opponent was gaining I felt the light of hope, slowly diminishing As the darkness grew I felt I climbed the highest mountain only to start falling before I reached the peak I felt I had almost reached the end of the river only to start drowning in worry I felt the life slowly going out of me Thousands of people were glued to their seats I had lost my hope completely Until I heard one word One word which was echoing among the whole stadium now My name. My beautiful name. Gifted to me by my amazingly wonderful parents Christened to me by my supportive relatives Plagiarized by my super adorable sister Addressed by lovely friends My name. My beautiful name. Like a dying man, energized back to life Like a falling climber, to suddenly climb and

Poem on Bullying (Not based on real life story)

I cry myself to sleep at night I wish it would just stop I hope it might cease tomorrow Again it really might not People taunt me Mercilessly tease me On my way to school They call me stupid and idiot And not to miss out fool I thought school was a place of fun But it changed my belief Now it is just a place  Where feelings of inclusiveness are none They turned my heart to ice Telling false lies They turned my soul into dust Hiding away was a must People never understood me So they pretended  I was not there But now you can decide Was that really fair ?

Speedy Arithmetic

SPEEDY ARITHMETIC In this article, I will share one of my favorite Maths Trick. This trick will turn you into a lightning-fast adding machine. The Effect- Five-digit, five rows addition within 2 seconds!! Answer from left to right. Materials- Paper , Pens The trick- Your volunteer writes down the first five digit number. When you write down the next number, make sure that each digit in your number, when added to the one above it will total nine. Volunteer’s Number: 37854 Your number:                62145    (Because 6+3=9,7+2=9 and so on) Ask your volunteer to write down another five-digit number below these two. Write the next five-digit number following the same nine- principle. After your volunteer writes down the fifth five-digit number, draw a line under it. Here’s how to find the total: Subtract two from the fifth digit of the number your volunteer just wrote and put two in front of what’s left. For example: (V.N- Volunteer’s number; Y.N- Your number) V.N:

The most memorable night of my life

I was preparing for my Math exam. I thought I had had enough of those figures when I went to my windowsill to see it was slightly drizzling. The heavenly whiff of the monsoon was overpowering. Suddenly, thud thud-the thunder struck. And following next came the lightning. I knew I was in for a heavy downpour. Next, the power got cut in my building. I lit a few candles and to pass time- tried my head at those puzzling figures again. That was when my friend who lived next door invited me to their house for dinner. They were pretty afraid the food might get spoiled, so they also invited us to bring our food from the fridge. We knew we were in for a fine time as I gazed at the collection of food, we had got some pizza, cake, ice-cream, chocolates, noodles, and juice. We even took a few torches and candles to spend the time there. I even took some games, toys, books and even my iPad. Jokes passed around the table along with games and we all were enjoying so much that we did not notice the

Example of promising story introduction.

I was all alone. The time sped by. I didn’t know what was the time-neither did I care. I sat waiting in the waiting room of the train station. The guard came and went, asked me several times of my train time. When I didn’t respond—he took me for a deaf person. The trains came and went. But none of them were the one I was waiting for. Though I knew that train would never come, I sat waiting like a mad person.   Soon all the seats were empty and the waiting room was abandoned and along with the crowd went my hope of ever seeing my brother again.

Where have those happy times gone ?

I still reminisce about the old times, where I used to have friends in each floor in my building. Our entire building used to be one huge family, rushing to the aid of others in times of distress or celebrating various festivals together. I still remember me being invited for Makar Sankranti festivities to my neighbor's home, while we invite them for Pongal. I remember me being invited to partake in a special dinner party for Christmas, by a friend who was my neighbor, while we shared the spirit of Diwali together. Where have those happy times gone ? I recall of those happy times, when I used to be the only girl player in the local boys' football team, appreciated for my goal keeping skills, leading our team to victory.  I remember having a chess challenge with my friend, where it was purely based on a time-pass intent, during the searing heat of the summer wave in UAE. Where have those happy times gone ? I still look back on those happy memories where the entire class used to

Why you may lack friends ?

Do you have a constant feeling that you lack friends ? You may see others having huge gangs of friends following them, and may feel a bit left out.  You may try to be friendly and outgoing, but especially if you are a natural leader, the bossy nature might come out accidently (something that's quite common with me :D !), you might not be an appealing friend to others. If this is your case, hear me out. The friends you have are decided by the quality and not quantity. Let me explain with the help of a short story, which I read- A student once asked his teacher, "How many friends one must have ?" To which his teacher replied, pointing to a mango tree," Take how many ever friends you want to grab the mango on the topmost branch." The student gathered his friends who all formed a human pyramid, they kept on increasing the number of friends, but couldnt reach the mango. The teacher replied," You may have these many friends, but the smartest friend would have br

Janaka and Ashtavakra- Book review by Sashini Manikandan

Image
Janaka and Ashtavakra by Ashraf Karayath, is the book which is my go-to source for my daily snippet of spiritual advice for this complex world. This book covers various aspects of practicing simplicity, serenity and asceticism. This book is written in a style, that can be a little complicated to understand, but all the same the must-read for the book for an ardent lover of philosophical and spiritual books. A little background on Indian mythology of Ramayana will, help the reader to connect to the setting of this book. (Spoiler Alert!) This story is about a quest for the knowledge of the unknown, questions about absolute realities and a journey towards spiritual liberation, which only requires a devoted heart and a steadfast soul.  This book was a refreshing read for me, as the hidden meaning is unfolded towards the climax of this book.  Rating- 4.75/5 Please comment on the review, and do share your opinions, feedbacks and suggestions on other books that I can review!

POLITICAL AWARENESS EXAM TO VOTE- OPPOSITION

POLITICAL AWARENESS EXAM TO VOTE India is a democratic country, and it has granted every citizen the right to vote in India under the Constitution of India. It does not judge its citizens on the grounds of caste, religion, gender, region, or language. Being the second most populous country in the world, almost more than half the population (city dwellers) do not exercise their right to vote. Then how do the political party get their power to rule? The reason behind this is village life. They are the ones who vote because the candidate has promised them something in return like decreased agricultural taxes, improvised machinery for making their life simpler etc. If we make them write exam, then they will become hesitant to write the exam just to vote as they will be afraid that they might fail. And it is not possible to just conduct exam for such a huge population. Under Article 326 of the Constitution of India it is provided that “The elections to the House of the People and to t

POLITICAL AWARENESS EXAM TO VOTE- PROPOSITION

POLITICAL AWARENESS EXAM TO VOTE In the present political scenario, many parties win because of bribing the people. They bribe and the people vote in turn for them. This is wrong and will make the entire society corrupt. Corruption can be stopped when the people vote for whoever they think will be ideal for the post and not the one who can afford to pay money. This shows that only the rich can have power. The poor can never come to the top. However good they are, their ideas, schemes are brought of by the richer ones, and they put their names instead of the real ideator. They don’t have knowledge of which candidate they are voting for. Giving a political awareness exam removes corruptive influence from society and the voters study why they would want to vote for the party. Every choice the citizen makes has a huge impact on the entire society. Often, they regret choosing a candidate after coming to power for they would not honor their promises. The poor people are being bribe

Tiger parenting-Proposition

TIGER PARENTING   The birth of a child is also the birth of the parents. The bond they share is special; however, different methods of parenting can affect it to a great extent. Some parents choose a strict method of upbringing, while some are patient and lenient.   There was a boy. He was very naughty. He refused to listen to his parents, always got scolded by his teacher and physically abused his friends. His parents got very worried and went to a child psychiatrist who had asked them, “What do you do when he is refusing to listen to you?” His parents had replied, “We plead him to stop as we don’t want to raise our voice to him.” The doctor immediately said, “That’s what the problem is. Next time he refuses to listen to you, raise your voice. That’s all.” His parents agreed and over a course of a month, the same boy began scoring high and getting good remarks from his teacher. “   This is the magic of TIGER PARENTING. It can change the child’s life. When the parents raise

Tiger parenting- Opposition

TIGER PARENTING There was a man. His parents forced him to study good, earn a seat in a top college and get a good job. He did so and when he got into a job, he kept on being devoted to the job earning promotions and increments in salary every time. He strived and strived and became a head to many world businesses. But when he grew old, he then only came to realize that he had not gained anything. He had just lost everything. His whole life. Success doesn’t last with you. Only happiness does. Success is never the key to happiness. Infact it is happiness that is the key to success. When you are happy and content and not pressurized, you can achieve greater results. Parents always want their children to be successful, and some of those parents push their children to the best they can. While some of us may believe, that success is all that matters in the world out there, I disagree partially. The tiger parenting style is famous for the high levels of achievement parents’ demand fr

Coffee- The perfect article for Coffee Aficionados

Coffee. Coffee is something I cannot live without, its something I dearly love. Here is an article on different type of coffees and which I liked the best! 1. Tamil Nadu Filter Coffee- This coffee is prepared on a traditional filter, mixing the frothing and boiled milk with the decoction obtained by percolation brewing of coffee beans.  It is believed that on a pilgrimage to Mecca in the 16th century Baba Budan, a revered Sufi saint from Karnataka state, discovered the wonders of coffee. Eager to grow coffee at home, he smuggled seven coffee beans from the Yemeni port of Mocha in his garments. Returning home, he planted the beans on the slopes of the Chandragiri Hills in Chicmagaluru district, Mysore State (present-day Karnataka). This hill range was later named after him as the Baba Budan Hills. His tomb is near Chikmagalur. Rating- 4.5/5  Pros- Frothy, Strong Cons- Can be very bitter 😛 2. Kodagu filter coffee- I tasted this marvelous hot beverage this year in Kodagu, the method of

"I was only following orders!!"-Sashini

“I was only following orders!” This phrase has been used so often, in so many circumstances, that today it is its own parody. The legal, moral, and personal implications of those words are rooted in man’s wartime conduct, as well as being his appeal for understanding and absolution. It is a plea mouthed by both the relatively innocent junior soldier and the duplicitous battlefield murderer. Does the phrase merit serious legal consideration? Is it a legitimate defence to war crimes today? Was it ever a legitimate defence to war crimes? Should morality trump the demands of economic or political competition? Pondering the dilemma of the soldier who must, for her own safety, obey orders but also know when to disobey them, may prompt the kind of conflict that produces advances in personal moral development ... Let me explain with an exampleA famous American case is that of Mitchell v. Harmony, 54 U.S. 13 How. 115 115 (1851), a civil suit growing out of the Mexican War [1846 - 1848
