Why Jawan is a perfect potpourri of Kollywood ?

 Hey readers!

Apologies for the long break in blogging! But I am back here with another super-exciting blog. As an amateur film critique with an avid interest in cinematography and the fascinating world of films, I have brought to you an article on why Jawan, the recent SRK BlockBuster. (Okay, maybe not too recent, guess I am a little outdated :) )

Jawan, is an action-thriller movie, directed by Atlee (A very prolific director, in my opinion), musical by Anirudh Ravichander, starring the King Khan (Shah Rukh Khan), and some big names in the Kollywood Industry, Nayanthara and Vijay Sethupathi. A movie well-received by audience across India and a box-office hit, it was released in major languages- Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada.

Let's draw some comparisons between Atlee's work (pre-Jawan), other Tamil Movies and Jawan.

1. Women Empowerment

This theme was strongly explored and well-received in Atlee's Tamil Film- Bigil (2019), starring Thalapathy Vijay and Nayanthara (repeated !). Moreover, it was a movie about how women are restrained in the conservative Indian society and the same was replicated in Jawan.

2. Double-Action

This is one of the favourite tools of present-day filmmakers and audience-favorite especially in the South Indian Film Industries.

Older examples include, Mersal (2017-Thalapathy Vijay starrer again!), Kotigobba(Kannada film starring Kiccha Sudeep) etc.

This was replicated with SRK starring as Vikram Rathore and Azad Rathore.

3. The same shock + Double Action Twist

One of the climax scenes from A.R. Murugadoss' Kaththi was Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V ed into Jawan where the double action twist was revealed to the antagonist in a scene that includes a live interview with the media, when the hero was supposed to be under the custody of the antagonist's henchmen. (Hmm...too much copying, but that's not it.)

4. Robinhood !?

SRK plays a Robinhood role to ensure the money swindled by the system, businessmen and corrupt politicians reach the rightful people which is again a copy of the 1993 Tamil film-Gentlemen (debut film of Shankar). [But of course, Atlee was a former assistant of Shankar right ?]

5. Miscellaneous Examples...

-Value of vote emphasized in Thalapathy Vijay starrer Sarkar (2018) repeated in the climax of Jawan

-Importance of Agriculture/Farmer suicides emphasized in Thalapathy Vijay starrer Kaththi(2014) repeated in Jawan

-Defective defence warfare weapons emphasized in Arrambam (Ajith starrer- 2013) repeated in Jawan

-Defective healthcare facilities emphasized in Mersal (Thalapathy Vijay starrer-2017) again repeated in Jawan

But above all, 90% of the plot line was a carbon copy of the 1990s Tamil film- Thaayi Naadu (MotherLand) starring Sathyaraj in dual roles.

Forget about all this, Atlee has done an amazing job as a director bringing the best of Kollywood to show the world what South India is capable of in Cinematography! So for that let's applaud the scintillating Ramaiya Vastavaiya and Zinda Banda!!

Until next time,

Sashini (Film Critique)
